August 2018 Small Blog Income Report

Welcome! August 2018 was a pretty stable month for Frugal Nesting, but a challenging one for me personally.

Traffic remained stable in August with ebbs and flows in the expected range, though slightly down from last month.

The summer slump doesn’t seem to have impacted us, with that one-week exception back in June. Traffic has been going strong for us this summer – knock on wood.

I’m curious what things will look like for us heading into fall and winter. I will be comfortable if things stay on the same trajectory but would love to see traffic pick up even more.

I’d love to start hitting 30,000 pageviews per month sooner than later. My search engine traffic seems to be picking up, which is really awesome!

Now on to the good stuff…let’s talk about money, honey!

Why Publish An Income Report?

Well, there are a number of reasons, including:

• It’s a great excuse for me to sit down each month to see what is working, what is not, and where I landed for the month.
• I love reading other people’s income reports. I find them fascinating, but they are getting harder to find. So why not make my own?
• It can be helpful for newer bloggers to see one example like this from a smaller blog.
• And it will be fun to see the change over time.

 

August 2018 Blogging Income Update

Before expenses, I earned $384.93 blogging in August 2018.

We’re heading in the right direction, being up $32.44 over last month. But still down from the glory days of May!

$300 is really the baseline that I’m gauging success on these days. So pushing $400 is good in my book.

I still cannot believe that it’s possible to make money like this from a blog. Can you? It’s just crazy to me!

Anyway, I’m very curious to see what the next few months hold income wise. September has started off kinda wonky so far. The first couple days were just like August ended, then trending up quite a bit on Labor Day, and so far today we are WAY down. I like to wake up to at least 100 pageviews between 5 AM – 6 AM, but after 7 AM it was barely over 50. So it will be interesting to see what that’s all about!

How Are Things Going at Frugal Nesting?

Frugal Nesting seems to remain consistent and has been holding its own. Thank goodness for that, because life has really done a number on us this month.

As you know from last month, my father had been gravely ill all summer and I went to visit him at the end of July.

Unfortunately, less than one week after I returned home we received the news that he had passed. Though it was expected, it was still very hard to hear and absorb the news.

The rest of August was quite the blur. We had a plumbing emergency right after we received the news about my Dad. Then back-to-school-prep and my birthday came + went.

It’s so strange how life just keeps on keepin’ on while you deal with real life stuff. But that’s just the nature of life I guess.

I was blessed to see him make it to 71 years of age, to spend those precious last moments with him, and to have the most incredible family by my side. We are surviving and leaning on each other.

Since then we’ve just been trying to keep our heads above water and make sure that back-to-school went without a hitch. And it looks like we nailed it, because we saw our eldest off to his 1st day of 3rd grade just a couple hours ago. All seems to have gone smoothly + I’m crossing my fingers that the day goes well for him!

Recent Updates

I haven’t changed much with the blog since the huge facelift back in May. I’ve done a little tweaking to increase the font to make it more mobile friendly for you guys. I hope it looks okay.

I’ve been sending out my biweekly newsletter using MailerLite to my sweet subscribers so you guys always have the inside scoop on what’s going on behind the scenes.

And I continue to work my way through Elite Blog Academy (EBA) by Ruth Soukup. It’s truly THE best option for building a successful blog from the ground up. Get on the mailing list now if you’re not already!

For the most part we’ve just been in maintenance mode over the summer. Now let’s see what Autumn has in store…

 

Traffic

In August 2018 we had a total of 20,497 page views, which is significantly less than we had in July.  But not too bad considering everything that’s been going on and summer!

I like to include a year over year screenshot to show the progress. Progress is really the only metric that means anything, particularly for smaller blogs.

 

 

Sessions and bounce rate definitely need some work, but overall trending well above last year for users and pageviews. Lookin’ good!!

It’s remarkable how significant the growth has been year over year. Looking at that gives me renewed inspiration + motivation!

And if the traffic doesn’t do it, the increase in income is even better. I only made $30.88 in August 2017!
